The Swingin' Blue Stars

The Swingin' Blue Stars is a group of talented singers from the East SF Bay Area. They perform close harmony, swing style music made popular by 1940’s and 50’s female vocal groups such as the Andrews Sisters. They sing and dance to “people-pleasing” music, mixing saucy and romantic WWII tunes that appeal to a variety of audiences, whether young or elderly. They also perform well-known songs from the 1960’s and 70’s. 

The group was founded in December 2001 by Cynthia Shon, when the original members had sons and daughters serving in the military and they were part of the East Bay Blue Star Moms. Initially, they began singing together to relieve the stress of having loved ones in a combat theater, as well as to have something positive to do for aging veterans. As they gained confidence in their harmony and style, they formed the Singing Blue Star Moms to share their love of music with the public. They selected their repertoire to demonstrate their appreciation for veteran’s of all wars, while increasing public support for troops currently serving in harms way. 

Within a few years, their high spirit, period style and swing repertoire gained a solid following in many parts of the SF Bay Area. Public demand expanded beyond the initial Blue Star Mom “support their troops” mission, with performance requests by veteran’s organizations, community service groups, city parades, retirement homes, and quite often, the USS Hornet Museum.

In May 2007, they changed their name to The Swingin’ Blue Stars, and established a relationship with the famous WWII aircraft carrier museum in Alameda. Their mission remains the same, however – they bring history to life for their audiences. For many veterans in the audience, faded memories suddenly come into sharp focus when they launch into a rendition of "Rum & Coca-Cola" or "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."
