Aoi Yamaguchi

Born and raised in Hokkaido, Japan, Aoi Yamaguchi has been trained to master calligraphy learning under Master Zuiho Sato from the age of 6, all the while refining her knowledge skills. She is a recipient of numerous awards including the First Place prize from the Minister of Education at the 44th Asahi Calligraphy Nationwide School Exhibit, Superior First Place at the 33rd National Students Calligraphy Exhibition and supreme prizes at competitive public exhibitions. She was selected to participate in the 4th Hokkaido Elementary and Junior High Students Visit to China in 2000 where she represented the country of Japan and participated in calligraphy exchange sessions at the Palace of Pupils of China.

Her works explore the juxtaposition of traditional Eastern classics and contemporary artistic expressions. She also uniquely transforms the two-dimensional art of Japanese Calligraphy into physical artistic expression through performance.

She has been performing in collaboration with musicians, contemporary music composers and producers, dancers and models. She has also worked on projects integrating calligraphy into live visuals for music festivals and concerts. Currently residing in Berkeley, California, she has been working on her unique conceptual calligraphy installations, exhibitions, live performances, custom logo design and commissioned art works internationally, as she pursues her career to blend traditional art forms with modern aesthetics.
